Winding Path Counseling is a small private practice started in 2014 and aimed at providing holistic mental health counseling for individuals, couples, and new parents. I recognize that because you are here, you are likely going through a lot right now, and I hope I will be able to help. I want to discuss a few things here that I think are helpful to consider before beginning therapy.
Find a Therapist Who Fits You
It is so important to find a therapist who you feel comfortable with. You are about to embark upon a journey of intense personal exploration, and you should have as your partner a therapist whose philosophy speaks to you. I recommend that you interview me (and any other therapists that you might be considering) in order to get a sense for whether I am a good fit for you. During our first contact I will also be getting a feel for whether I am the best counselor for your needs. Don’t feel shy about letting me know if it doesn’t seem like a good fit, I want you to find the right therapist for you – one therapist does not fit all!
Mental Health Counseling is a Form of Healthcare
Historically, physical health has gotten more attention and support in our culture than mental health. This is changing, but it is a slow process. It is normal for people to get regular physical check-ups to stay healthy, and it is common knowledge that taking care of your body helps to prevent bigger health problems in the long run. I’ll let you in on a secret: mental health works the same way. Investing in your mental health sooner rather than later will help you to avoid bigger pitfalls down the road.
Therapy Takes Work
If you want to get something out of therapy, you will need to put something in. I am here to support to you, but you are the one who will be doing the work. Be prepared to examine, and potentially challenge, your current thoughts, behaviors, and beliefs. This may sound daunting, but what it means is that you are the one who creates change in your own life. Everything you achieve in therapy is yours to own and to take with you for the rest of your life.
